Four Count

Terminology:

Chambered Position

A starting position in which both sticks are held on one side of the body. A chambered position is also known as a closed position.

The RIGHT chamber:

  • The right stick is held over your right shoulder.
  • The left stick is held against your body, tucked under your right armpit.

The LEFT chamber:

  • The left stick is held over your left shoulder.
  • The right stick is held against your body, tucked under your left armpit.

When held in this chambered position, both sticks should be roughly parallel to each other.

Slash ("Lobtik")

A strike that crosses the center line. A slash can be either a forehand or backhand motion.


Right-side four Count

Start: Right Chamber. Face the bag or partner. Right foot forward.

  • Right slash – Forehand
  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left slash – Forehand

End: Right Chamber. Repeat drill


Left-side four Count

Start: Left Chamber. Face the bag or partner. Left foot forward.

  • Left slash – Forehand
  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right slash – Forehand

End: Left Chamber. Repeat drill

Four Count with Swing Switch

Terminology:

Switch:

A method of changing dominant sides (leads) within a drill.

A right-foot-forward stance is a right lead.

A left-foot-forward stance is a left lead.

Four Count with Swing Switch

Start: Right chamber. Face the bag or partner. Right foot forward.

  • Right slash – Forehand
  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left slash – Forehand

Switch sides by swinging both sticks out low in front of you, ending in the left chamber. Sticks do not make contact with bag or partner’s sticks when swinging to the other side.

(Optional: Switch the position of feet, bringing the left foot forward)

  • Left slash – Forehand
  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right slash – Forehand

Switch sides by swinging both sticks out low in front of you, ending in the right chamber. Sticks do not make contact with bag or partner’s sticks when swinging to the other side.

(Optional: Switch the position of feet, bringing the right foot forward)

End: Right chamber.

Variation: Practice the Four Count Swing Switch as a "flow", repeating the drill non-stop as you swing switch from side to side.

Four Count with Slash Switch

A left-foot-forward stance is a left lead.

Four Count with Slash Switch

Start: Right chamber. Face the bag or partner. Right foot forward.

  • Right slash – Forehand
  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left slash – Forehand

Finish in the right chamber.

Switch sides by adding two more slashes, beginning with the left hand.

  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right slash – Forehand

Finish in the left chamber, and continue from the left side:

  • Left slash – Forehand
  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right slash – Forehand

Switch sides by adding two more slashes, beginning with the right hand.

  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left slash – Forehand

End: Right chamber.

Four Count with Jab Slash Switch

Terminology:

Switch

A method of changing dominant sides (leads) within a drill.

A right-foot-forward stance is a right lead.

A left-foot-forward stance is a left lead.

Jab ("Witik")

A quick, snapping strike that does not cross the centerline.

Open Position

Both sticks are held in front of you, one on each side of the centerline of your body, tips facing upwards.  

Four Count with Jab Slash Switch

Start: Right chamber. Face the bag or partner. Right foot forward.

  • Right slash – Forehand
  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left jabForehand

Continue from an Open Position

Switch sides by adding one more slash with the right hand.

  • Right slash – Forehand

Finish in the left chamber, and continue from the left side:

  • Left slash – Forehand
  • Right slash – Backhand
  • Left slash – Backhand
  • Right jabForehand

Continue from an Open Position

Switch sides by adding one more slash with the left hand.

  • Left slash – Forehand

End: Right chamber.
